I’m Feeling Tense! Well, Maybe Not! With Executive Editor Karen Chaplin

Date/Time
Date(s) - 09/20/2021
7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

Writers use tension to hook readers’ interest and keep the plot moving, whether they are writing thrillers, mysteries, sci-fi, fantasy, literary fiction, or romantic comedies. So, how do we create strong tension in so many different types of stories? Executive Editor, Karen Chaplin, will demonstrate techniques that will bump up the tension in your work, strengthen the conflict in your story, and keep readers turning pages until the end.

Karen Chaplin is an executive editor at Quill Tree Books / HarperCollins Children’s Books. She acquires and edits middle-grade and young adult fiction, nonfiction, and graphic novels, as well as fiction and nonfiction picture books. Authors she has worked with include New York Times bestselling authors Tim Green, Amy Ewing (The Jewel trilogy), and Margot Lee Shetterly (Hidden Figures Young Readers’ Edition and picture book); PW Flying Start Paul Mosier (Train I Ride); two-time Edgar Award Nominee Lamar Giles (Fake ID, Endangered, Not So Pure and Simple); Caela Carter (ALA Notable Forever, or a Long, Long Time); Jennifer Lynn Alvarez (The Guardian Herd series; Riders of the Realm series); Kathleen Krull (Fly High, John Glenn); Rebecca Ross (The Queen’s Rising duology and Sisters of Sword and Song); and Paula Stokes (Liars, Inc., Girl Against the Universe).
