Date(s) - 12/13/2022
7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

Author and illustrator, Melissa Iwai, will discuss the benefits of having structural and thematic constraints in place when writing a children’s book manuscript. She will touch on what helped her to break into writing after illustrating books for many years, how thematic constraints helped her to write Dumplings for Lili, and how structural constraints of Leveled Readers freed her from writer’s block.

Melissa Iwai is the author of Soup Day, Pizza Day, Dumplings for Lili a recent winner of the SCBWI Crystal Kite Award for New York, and the I Can Read series, Gigi and Ojiji. She has illustrated numerous other picture books, including Thirty Minutes Over Oregon, Let’s Go to the Hardware Store, and Hush Little Monster.

When she’s not illustrating or writing, she enjoys cooking and baking and doing crossword puzzles with her husband, author, Denis Markell.
