Landing a Literary Agent: Advice from an Agent/Clients
Literary Agent Alexander Slater (Trident Media Group) and his clients, middle grade author Jodi Kendall (THE UNLIKELY STORY OF A PIG IN THE CITY, HarperChildrens, October 2017, and DOG DAYS IN THE CITY, forthcoming October, 2018) and up-and-coming middle grade and young adult author Janae Marks, demystify the querying process and offer tips & resources for aspiring kidlit authors. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn current manuscript wish lists, purchase an autographed copy of THE UNLIKELY STORY OF A PIG IN THE CITY, ask questions in an informal educational setting, and submit a query letter to Alexander. Whether you’re an aspiring author who’s been in the querying trenches for months/years, or a newbie looking to gain querying insight from various perspectives in the industry, there will be helpful tips and networking opportunities for everyone.
Alexander Slater has been with prominent NYC literary agency Trident Media Group since 2010. As an agent in the Foreign Rights department, he represented the entire agency’s middle grade and young adult titles. He’s attended the book fairs in Bologna, London, and Frankfurt, and is now building his list domestically. Some of his clients include Dana Langer, Ali Novak, L.J. Smith, Jodi Kendall, Molly Booth, Kelly Yang, and Tim Grove. He has sold his client’s books to Abrams Children’s, Greenwillow, HarperCollins Children’s Books, Arthur A. Jodi Kendall’s debut middle grade novel THE UNLIKELY STORY OF A PIG IN THE CITY sold at auction in a two-book deal to HarperCollins Children’s Books within weeks of submission. Jodi is a former freelance wildlife journalist, with clients including Nat Geo Wild and the National Geographic Channel, and an official Guest Speaker for Skype Classroom. Janae Marks’s debut middle grade novel FROM THE DESK OF ZOE WASHINGTON sold at auction in a two-book deal to Katherine Tegen Books/Harper Collins, and will be published in winter 2020.
